- Now, the app users can pay their traffic rule violation fines on the app while traffic police won’t have to use any paper to issue fines as they can do with their own app
Vehicle owners all over Nepal can now rely on driving licenses on the Nagarik App during their inspection by traffic police. The app also brings a QR code for traffic police to scan and enables fine payment via the app instantly completing its digital transformation from the regular printed copy. Here are all the features and elevated privileges the app has introduced you can’t miss.
Nepal’s current prime minister KP Sharma Oli announced that the driver’s license’s digital copy on the app is now fully accepted by traffic police all over Nepal. Prior to this, the app would be accepted only during regular checking but not during traffic rule violations.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, October 19, he shared that those who have passed trial exams for their driving license will get an electronic copy of their driving license on the popular government app. This is particularly helpful as people are having to wait years for a smart driving license.
The PM Oli said, “After passing the trial for the driver’s license, it is arranged that the license card is no longer required. The license will be available on the concerned person’s mobile through the Nagarik App.”
Earlier, traffic police only accepted digital driving licenses as they had no scanner to scan and verify the details. Now, they have been issued the machine and can easily scan and see all the details of the riders and drivers so, there is no need to carry the physical document. These benefits are available on both iOS and Android smartphone platforms.

QR code, offline mode, and fine payment are all possible through a driving license on Nagarik App
If you have checked, now the Nagarik App shows a QR code below the driving license. Traffic police scan this QR code to verify the identification of the drivers/riders. The QR contains all the personal details and relevant information collected by the Department of Transport Management (DoTM).
Additionally, the app works offline for showing the driving license. While it doesn’t work for other real-time services, users can still produce their driving license, PAN Card, and citizenship digitally stored documents without the internet. It’s very helpful when you are pulled over and need to produce the driving license but there’s no cellular network, balance, or data pack.
In addition, an e-chalan system has been added so that drivers can pay fines via the app on the go. For this, traffic police are provided with a dedicated scanning device and an app that scans the QR code for details. After the fine is issued, the details are sent to the concerned person’s Driving License > Violations Records section on the Nagarik App. Users can pay for the fine by tapping on the “Pay Now” option using eSewa or Khalti. As the fine comes with the chit number, drivers and riders can pay the fines instantly or share the chit number with others to get it paid.

There is no need to carry a physical driving license anymore
It’s greatly welcoming news that Nepali vehicle owners don’t have to carry a physical driving license. It’s particularly useful when we consider that the government hasn’t been able to issue driving licenses in time.
Also, this removes the issue of lost or missing driving licenses or when someone leaves it at home only to realize it later. It gets better with the app’s ability to show driving license even offline which further elevates the convenience.
The only quibble is that users with only the feature phones or those who are unversed in the technicality of all these may not benefit from these. Otherwise, the facility provided by the NAgarik App shall cover the majority of the driving license holders across Nepal.
