TikTok has solidified its commitment in Nepal as it starts life after a 9-month-long ban. This has been evident in the Bytedance-owned company conducting various programs to enhance community upliftment programs, safety, etc. Recently, the company also removed over 6000 videos that it deemed anti-social.
At a recent event in Kathmandu, TikTok organized a “Digital Safety Summit Nepal” in coordination with the Ministry of Communication, Information, and Technology (MoCIT) in which, the company shared that it deleted 6,078 videos created and posted by TikTok users in Nepal. What’s even more interesting is that 99.1% of those videos were deleted instantly after they were uploaded by users while 93.2% were removed within 24 hours. That’s the algorithm doing it!
At the event, Sidra Jalil, a representative of TikTok also presented guidelines the company implements for content regulation on its popular video-sharing platforms.

TikTok Rules for Video Message and Live
TikTok has fixed an age bar for users to post videos or go Live for users and these rules also apply to Nepali users. According to Jalil, users need to be at least 16 for direct messaging (DM) and 18 to go Live on TikTok.
These guidelines are also quoted in TikTok’s guidelines. However, he did admit that due to the lack of awareness of these rules among users, these are not strictly followed.

TikTok commitment in Nepal
TikTok was unbanned in Nepal after it agreed to the terms and conditions set by the government of Nepal. Complying with this, the company has started content filtering with more scrutiny. Any video that is likely to hurt religious, social, or communal sentiments, or display inappropriate and explicit behaviors is likely to be removed from the video platform.
Besides video removal, TikTok is now actively engaged in various upliftment programs. Recently, it hosted an event to discuss how the platform could be exploited to benefit businesses including small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Road ahead
TikTok is starting a new life in Nepal after the ban on it was lifted on August 22, 2024. But for it to continue, it has to strongly implement its regulations to make the platform a healthy space for all users. Currently, it’s stirred right in that path and we are excited to see it this way.
TikTok app is one of the most used social media apps in Nepal and is extremely popular among the youth and businesses for passing time and promoting their products and services. Let’s hope it stays that way and remains a healthy and constructive space for all.
