How To Get Started as a Website Developer?

Today, In this article I am going to explain how to get started as a website developer. In this era of the Internet and all this advancement in technology, many people want to make a career in IT as programmers, developers and many other related jobs.

Despite this, the majority of the people don’t have quite an idea regarding how to get started. Although there are a plethora of materials available all over the Internet regarding this, many people still have confusion regarding how to choose the wise option.

As pursuing a career in web development, you got to be consistent. In this journey, working continuously towards the same thing would only guarantee your success. You learn by doing and the best thing you could do to learn things is through practically implementing what you’ve learnt.

Getting Started

You could either build a roadmap or go through pre-existing roadmap if you want to learn things from scratch to complex matter in a proper specific matter. The second option is planning a project and actually doing it; which would automatically force you to learn things.

Responsibilities of Web Developer:

  1. Write web pages with a combination of markup languages.
  2. Understand HTML and CSS
  3. Create quality mockups and prototypes.
  4. Build a WordPress site from scratch.
  5. Understand UI, UX and learning usability.
  6. Develop functional and appealing websites and web-based applications.
  7. Provide website maintenance and enhancements.

How to get started as a Website Developer?

1) Learn the Basics of HTML, CSS and Javascript:

These are the basic building blocks of all websites.

  • HTML dictates the structure.
  • CSS will make it look pretty.
  • Javascript will make it functional.

HTML:

HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. It’s one of the main ingredients of any website and one of the so-called frontend languages. It provides the basic skeleton of a website.

CSS:

CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. It puts the style behind the HTML site. Basically, without CSS, HTML and consequently the whole website would look dull.

Javascript:

Javascript is a programming language that allows you to implement elements on web pages. It focuses on the functionality part of the website.

2) Learn the Basics of WordPress:

You should know the basic concept of WordPress if you want to become a website developer. As 63% of all websites are powered by WordPress, you can install it on basically any web host. WordPress is a free and open-source Content Management System(CMS) written in Php.

It is fairly easy for you clients to add content by themselves even if they don’t have any web development experience.

3) Know UI and UX:

UI stands for User Interface and UX stands for User Experience. They are basics of user experience design.

Through learning the fundamentals of user experience design, you can better understand how a website is supposed to work.

Adobe Creative Suite is one of the most recommended framework to learn the building blocks of design skills.

4) SQL and PHP:

SQL stands for Structured Query Language. A query language is a kind of programming language that’s designed to facilitate retrieving specific information from databases and that’s exactly what SQL does.

In website we use lot of databases, SQL handles data in a relational database management system.

Php is general-purpose, server-side scripting language run on a web server that’s designed to make dynamic pages and applications. Php as a web development option is secure, fast and reliable that offers a lot more advantages to make it accessible to lot a lot of people.

5) SEO

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. This refers to the process of improving a website’s ranking with a search engine like Google.

Although a large part of the website’s SEO has to do with the content the actual structure and code of the website play a role as well.

SEO Tips:

  • Get meta tag optimized
  • Make sure heading tags are in a specified order
  • Make sure the title tag properly describes the webpage. The title should emphasize what the page is about.

6) Make sure the site is Responsive

Responsive means that the elements of the website adjust according to the screen size.

This makes your website look good whether the visitor is on laptop or mobile device.

Once you go through these steps, you will have a basic understanding of web development. You need to take your time with these steps as the demand for web developers isn’t going down anytime soon. So you have time to learn.
