The government of Nepal is at work to develop a large language model (LLM). The information was shared by Narayan Timalsina, Deputy Secretary at the communication ministry while speaking at the AI for Nations Development program in Lalitpur on Thursday, March 20.
The news confirms that the Nepali government is not untouched by the globally raging topic of LLM. We have been hearing of it more often since OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT/ChatGPT Plus which are powered by GPT LLMs. So, the gist is that the government also wants to create an LLM to bolster AI growth.
According to Timalsina, the government plans to create a local LLM in Nepali language which means that it will be made with the Nepali public in mind.
“Currently, we are discussing the development of a local LLM, he said, “Nepali LLM will promote the Nepali language while also enhancing technology in different industries.”
The government plans to cooperate with various expert groups and organizations on the development of a Nepali LLM.

The government making a local Large Language Model
So far, the government made news for its attempt at digitalizing its public services. We didn’t hear much about attempts at developing an LLM. However, it seems like finally, we have an initiative coming from the government level.
If materializes, Nepal will have its own indigenous LLM that will power chatbots, help with translation, generating text, summation, etc. Likewise, it will help with public services in education, health, transport, etc. And let’s not forget that it will likely come affordably.
We are living in the age of AI and new LLMs are powering AI services such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and the new sensation- DeepSeek AI. It’s time we got our own local LLM and its subsequent services.
