Lalitpur Metropolitan City (LMC) has brought into operation an early warning system that can detect water levels from its office. The system was installed in Bhadra of 2082, but has recently been switched on to work.
The system is expected to help the local body get early warning regarding water levels during heavy rainfall, which shall become vital in evacuation efforts.
LMC Mayor Chiribabu Maharjan said that this type of system will provide early warning when water flow in rivers and canals increases or crosses the danger level. Bells placed at various places will ring to notify of any potential danger.

The system will help the local and municipal police to prepare to avert the worst during disasters. “If the water flow in the river is increasing, the early warning system rings a bell, and then preparations can be made,” he said. “We have installed such a system to protect the locals from floods and landslides and reduce damage. This system can detect if there is rain or flooding two kilometers away.”
According to him, the municipal police office in Pulchowk has a control system, and sensors and bell systems have been installed in every river.
Now, the city police won’t have to go to the river to check the water and flow of the river, informed Sitaram Hachhethu, the city police chief of LMC. According to him, such technology will help in preparing for floods and increases in the river area in the coming years. “The technology we have installed is new, which gives advanced information about the flow of water in the river. If a flood is coming somewhere and the settlement there is at risk, then we know in advance. Such a system will make it easier to work in a disaster,” he said.

The monsoon has ended for 2082; however, the system will always be useful whenever there’s heavy rainfall or the water level rises above the risk levels. In addition, the system also provides information about the temperature and weather conditions wherever it is installed. Currently, Lalitpur Metropolitan City has purchased all kinds of disaster-related tools and equipment in sufficient quantities.
