This feature is found on messaging apps such as Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram, and is activated by default. In fact, it’s recently been allowed that you can disable read receipts.

There are some convincing reasons you may need to disable read receipts
It’s perceived that when our messages are read, we are expected to respond soon. But suppose that you are on a bus, car, or somewhere, or engaged in something very important, and inadvertently tapped on the message that made it seem. Now, if you don’t reply, you may run the risk of irking or disappointing them.
So, it’s sometimes safe and even lifesaving not to let messages be seen. It helps that you frame that you haven’t read the messages from your friends or family when in reality you have. It helps you read what’s been sent in the message, while you also don’t feel obligated to send a prompt reply.

Disable read receipts on Facebook Messenger
To disable read receipts on Facebook Messenger, follow the steps below:
- Go to Menu
- Tap Settings > Privacy and Safety
- Tap on Read receipts
- Now, slide left to disable “seen” status

Disable read receipts on WhatsApp
You can also hide the “seen” status on WhatsApp. Here are the steps you need to follow to deactivate read receipts on WhatsApp:
- Tap on the vertical three dots
- Tap on Settings
- Tap on Privacy
- Tap on Read Receipts to disable the “seen” marker for messages
Disable read receipts on Instagram
Another Meta platform, Instagram, lets you hide the seen status on your messages. Do follow the steps below to switch off read receipts on Instagram:
- Tap on your profile icon
- Tap on the three dash menu
- Tap on Messages and story replies
- Tap on Show read receipts and tap once to disable it
