Chinese EV manufacturer BYD (Build Your Dreams) has surpassed US-based Tesla to become the world’s largest EV seller.
The Asian EV giant published a report on Thursday, sharing that its car sales rose about 28% to 2.26 million units in 2025. To the contrary, Tesla, headed by Elon Musk, only managed to sell 1.64 million units in the same year. The company sold only 418,227 electric vehicles, which is less than the 440,000 target forecast by market analysts.
BYD has been globetrotting with its BYD Atto 3/2/1, and other lineups, while Tesla is also popular, especially in Europe, with the likes of Model Y and Model 3.

However, the company has received much flak after Musk joinedthe Trump Administration to lead government efficiency. The rest is history of what happened, but the billionaire entrepreneur faced public backlash, and campaigns were started to discard Tesla. Musk left DOGE, which many claim was a move to ensure investors that a revival will follow.
Now, the company is eyeing expansion in driverless cars for ride-hailing services. It has kept investors upbeat about the company’s future.

As 2026 begins, the two competitors enter a crucial stage, also affected by the US-Venezuela tensions. Whether BYD will be hit in its sales figures will be interesting to see. But Tesla should do better as it has gradually been overcoming the backlash ordeal.
