Lalitpur Metropolitan City (LMC) has implemented Nepal’s first-ever Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered Intelligent traffic light system to reinforce traffic management efforts. The automated system is expected to be more efficient and helpful in managing traffic congestion in the bustling city.
The AI-backed Intelligent traffic light system was inaugurated by LMC’s Mayor Chiribabu Maharjan by activating it near the Metropolitan office. The system works with colors switching automatically depending on the density of vehicles on its sides.
Lalitpur Metropolitan City formally launched the system at Pulchowk, where Mayor Chiribabu Maharjan inaugurated the lights by switching on the first unit installed near the Metropolitan Office.

Capabilities
The lights feature a vehicle detection system that counts the number of vehicles in real-time. Then, it feeds the data to the server and adjusts the lights’ operation. Additionally, it has a dedicated vehicle detector that reads number plates and records traffic details.
Another interesting aspect is that the AI-enabled traffic light can switch to different working modes including manual and adaptive traffic control systems (ATCS). It’s said that the lights can record and store the data for up to five years which can be very helpful in data interpretation.
Locations of AI-powered Intelligent traffic lights in Lalitpur
The AI traffic lights in Lalitpur will be expanded in phases. At first, five traffic lights were installed strategically along the Kupondole-Jawalakhel, two at Pulchowk, one at Kandevata, Damkal Chowk, and one at Jawalakhel.
Another key point of the AI-enabled system is that it will only make people wait for 30 – 50 seconds before they can “move”. For office goers to pedestrians, the advanced light system will greatly help with their travels.

Milestone effect
LMC Mayor called for the installation of AI-backed traffic lights significant for traffic management. The automated system detects when to activate each light according to the volume of vehicles,” He said and added that awareness campaigns will be headed by school students and city police for its effective operation.
The plan is to install these systems at 117 locations in Lalitpur Metro including the major roads outside the ring road.
