Recently, the current Nepal PM, Mrs. Sushila Karki-led government brought a new regulation for online media registration and renewal process. With “Printing Houses and Publications (Second Amendment) Regulations, 2082’ put in place, the interim government has issued a new fee structure for the registration of online media outlets.
Online media registration fee in Nepal
The online media registration fee in Nepal is set at Rs 5,000. The existing electronic outlets need to pay Rs 2,500 for their renewal annually. Prior to this, there was no fee structure set for registration and renewal of online media outlets.
| Online media fees | Fee |
| Registration | Rs 5,000 |
| Renewal | Rs 2,500 |
The regulations also penalty of 10% in fine in the first month to 200% in the seventh month if an entity is not renewed. It must be known that no fee is being charged for renewal till Poush, 2082.

Basic requirements for the operation of online media outlets
The government has also laid out some basic requirements for the operation of online media outlets. These are:
- Need to have at least three employees, including an editor
- The same editor can’t serve as an editor for another outlet
- Application for registration and renewal must be done through the information management system
- Media outlets must keep the registration number, office name, contact, etc., on their websites
The regulations aim at making online registration a part of the government’s revenue system and more accountable to the prevailing rules and regulations. But some may have a reservation about the fees set for registration and renewal.
