The Department of Information Technology (DoIT) will now take responsibility for the monitoring of Nepal’s local domain .np (dot np). It will now manage and regulate domain’ name, management and regulation. This comes after the government registered the provision in the Information Technology and Cyber Security Bill 2082 in the Federal Parliament, stating rules for the .np domain name operation in Nepal.
The newly etched provision is found in Chapter 5 of the bill, where Section 39 states, ‘The department will manage and regulate the domain name. The department may give necessary instructions to the domain name operator to make the domain name operation reliable and secure.’
The provision states that a .np domain is to be registered with the organization designated by the DoIT. After successful registration, no other individual or organization can register the same domain name.

.np domain renewal date
The bill has quoted terms for government domain names, too. It states that government bodies will have to register their domain names under gov.np. This helps identify that a particular domain is for government services. As for renewal, non-governmental domain names must be renewed every two years, while the government-operated .np domains do not have to be renewed.
Section 6 of the bill mentions that domain names in operation shall be registered within six months after the commencement of this bill.
Domain names listed below are safe for second and third-level domain names:
- Trade names registered in the name of a company in accordance with the prevailing law
- Names of geographical or tourism places
- Names of archaeological or religious importance
- Names of nationally renowned individuals
- Names of geographical or tourism places
- Names of archaeological or religious importance
- Names of nationally renowned individuals
- Names of government organizations
- Names of international non-governmental organizations
- Other names specified by the Government of Nepal
The bill states that any individual or organization operating a domain that is inconsistent with the rules in the bill will be subject to up to Rs 1 lakh in fine.
