VoWiFi also called WiFi Calling is an upcoming communication technology in Nepal that enables mobile users to make phone calls using WiFi. It provides HD voice and removes reliance on mobile towers for calls among other benefits which is why it’s a growing facility for mobile users. Here, this post will make you familiar with what VoWiFi is, its benefits, how to activate, and more.
VoWiFi in Nepal | Launch date
Nepal Telecom commercially launched VoWiFi service on Magh 22, 2081 while private telco Ncell is launching the service very soon. This new technology serves as a value-based service for customers as it allows them to communicate without traditional mobile infrastructure.
With VoWiFi launched, around 2.5 million WiFi users in Nepal have become potential beneficiaries of this service. However, users will require carrier support for it and devices must also be eligible.
What is VoWiFi
VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi) is a technology that lets you call on WiFi instead of using signals from cellular towers, aka base stations. It is similar to VoLTE, but while VoLTE works ostensibly on a 4G network, VoWiFi works when connected to an active WiFi connection.
NOTE: VoWiFi works even if only one party has it activated. Both parties do not have to have VoWiFi on their phone.

How to activate VoWiFi on your phone?
On your Android phone, you can activate VoWiFi by going to Settings > Network & Internet > SIM or something similar. If it’s an iPhone, you can navigate through Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling to activate VoWiFi on your iPhone.
How does it work?
VoWiFi works by converting voice into data packets and converting them into audible human voice as the receiver receives them. When the receiver also speaks, the same process takes place as the voice is converted into digital data to transmit to the sender and again turned into human voice to make it understandable.
Advantages of VoWiFi
- HD voice: One of the best benefits of VoWiFi technology is that it provides HD voice service. Therefore, the voice feels clearer and louder than on a cellular service.
- No dependency on mobile towers: Another thing is that VoWiFi removes the need for mobile towers for calls. If you happen to live far from a cellular tower or the coverage is not as strong, you can count on your home WiFi’s signals to do the service for you.
- No extra cost: Carriers don’t charge an extra on the bills for WiFi service. It’s treated just as normal calls and tariffs are applied as PAYG or something similar. So, you get HD voice with your own WiFi without having to pay extra.
- Convenience: Isn’t it great that you can enjoy your WiFi browsing and still make calls? If you are on 4G and place a call, you get relegated to 3G or 2G (if there’s no VoLTE) but while you are WiFi Calling, no such thing happens.

Disadvantages of VoWiFi
- WiFi is not always there: One major issue with VoWiFi is that a WiFi connection may not always be there to use. Also, it’s subject to network issues like mobile networks. It could have disruption, lower speed, throttle from the ISP, etc.
- Ineligible devices/no carrier support: VoWiFi needs eligible devices and support from the carrier (telecom operator) for it to work. Even if one criterion is met and not the other, then the technology won’t be up for use.
- International calls: Carriers may charge tariffs differently for international calls on VoWiFi and it’s also possible that the service provider won’t support such calls via WiFi.
- Call switching: It’s nagging but also true. Once the WiFi signal gets worse, the phone’s system may switch to the cellular network for the call to continue. This may not be preferable for all.
VoWiFi in Ntc, Ncell WiFi Calling
As I stated above, Ntc’s VoWiFi (WiFi Calling) is already available for select handsets. In the first phase, some models from Samsung Xiaomi, and Tecno support WiFi Calling in the Ntc network. Ncell is also said to be working on it and commercially bringing it into operation.
Ntc says that its VoWiFi costs are the same as in the PAYG mode while using the service outside Nepal, it is free for incoming calls and costs Rs 3 per minute for outgoing calls.
Ncell is likely to follow a similar pattern for VoWiFi tariffs, but that will be confirmed only after the telco launches the service.
Conclusion
VoWiFi in Nepal is the next-generation service for mobile users. It ensures users that they can resort to WiFi for calling even if they don’t have great cellular coverage. And the fact that there won’t be an extra cost assigned to WiFi Calling in Nepal, users would likely find its benefits more than its demerits. Especially in areas with low or no mobile networks, VoWiFi will be a great help given that both carrier and mobile phone support it.
The service has begun and Ncell will make it happen soon. so, there are likely to be fresh updates coming on VoWiFi, so we are keeping track of every detail.
