Tata Punch SUV (sport utility vehicle) has created a glorious history. It has become the highest-selling car in India first the first time in 40 years shaking Maruti-Suzuki product off its stubborn perch. This comes after Tata sold 202,030 units of Punch SUVs in 2024.
Shailesh Chandra, MD of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, said, “For Tata Motors, 2024 was the fourth consecutive year of record annual sales with 565,000 units sold. We registered strong growth in our SUV portfolio with successful product introductions built on our proven multi-powertrain strategy. SUV volumes grew by 19 percent, with the Punch selling over 200,000 units, making it the highest-selling car model in India in 2024.”
Maruti has been leading the car sales figures in India since the 1980s when it dethroned Ambassador. Most notably, Maruti had it to Maruti 800, Alto, WagonR, Swift, Dzire, etc. for its overwhelming success.

Tata Punch is the highest-selling car in 2020 in India but what it means?
Well, Tata Punch’s far-reaching sales figures reflect consumers’ shift in choice of cars. It seems that more customers today are likely to buy an affordable SUV. The trend is also driven by manufacturers like Tata itself offering cars at affordable prices with premium features that were once exclusive to select brands and models.
SUVs’ dominance is seen in the top car sales list from 2024 where three in the top five were SUVs- Maruti Wagon R with 190,855, Maruti Brezza with 188,160, and Hyundai Creta with 186,919-unit sales.
