Nepal world’s second largest in EV adoption only behind Norway

It’s at large that the electric vehicle EV migration rate in Nepal is going at a steady pace. But it’s got even more stunning that Nepal is in the world’s second rank when it comes to using EVs and sales rate. A report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) and Amber highlights that in the last six years, EV sales increased by 8 percent.

The report shows that Nepal’s EV sales market share stood 73% in 2025. At the top is Norway, whose EV transactions stand at a stunning 97%.

The figure has been rising consistently in recent years. For e.g., in 2019, Nepal’s EV sales were just 8%. The ecosystem for EV has grown to such a degree that it soared over 9 times in just six years. It shall further increase in 2026 without a doubt. And it’s not difficult to see why. It’s common to see electric cars and scooters in the street in high numbers these days.

To compare, the globe trotter Norway seems already way ahead of the rest. In 2019, the country already had 56% of EV shares in the country.

The report shows that Norway topped EV sales share with 97%, while Nepal followed in second with 73%. Denmark comes in at third with 69%, while Sweden clocks in at fourth with 61%. Iceland trails with 57% at fifth place. Continuing the domination of Scandinavian representation, Finland follows in sixth place in EV sales with 56%.

The table here helps only to show the rate of EV sales, but it won’t translate to the real figures in terms of sales. Because in that equation, China tops the chart. In 2025, over 10.32 million EVs were sold. It’s become the most bustling market for EVs at the moment. In terms of volumes sold again, Belgium comes second with 43%, followed by Portugal with 37%.

To illustrate, out of 100 new cars sold in Nepa, 73 of them are EVs. And they can be a combination of BEV or PHEVs, different variants of EVs.

EV sales grow along with the ecosystem

Government policies, consumers’ sensibilities with the environment, ads, promotions, and a desire to follow the trend are contributing to the record EV adoption in Nepal. Further, lower maintenance costs, long-term savings on fuel, and growing availability of charging stations have fueled the desire to switch to EVs. And not just with cars, more people are attracted to electric two-wheelers as well. Find other top reasons to buy EVs in Nepal.

The fascination shall continue in the near future. The previous government of KP Oli didn’t make major changes in EV tax, which also did aid in the continuation of the progressive EV sales trajectory. Clearly, the government policies’ desire to create environmentally friendly nobility has also played its part in it.
