POS machines can now initiate Visa card payments in Nepal. The facility comes via a partnership between Fonepay and Visa. Prior to this, tourists visiting Nepal relied on POS machines to conduct their transactions via Visa cards.
This Fonepay and Visa collaboration will greatly elevate the user experience of Visa card holders while visiting Nepal. According to Fonepay, visitors with a Visa card in Nepal can now securely make payments via Fonepay QR, removing the reliance on POS machines for the same. So, tourists can now more easily pay for goods and services in Nepal by simply scanning a QR at merchants.

Fonepay to process Visa card payments for tourists at over 15 lakh merchants
It’s said that the Visa and Foneay agreement for “Scan to Pay” will facilitate over 15 lakh QR merchants to receive payment from tourists across Nepal. For this, tourists need to have a tokenized Visa card. This allows them to transact in Nepal by scanning the Fonepay QR.
Speaking on this collaboration with Fonepay, Sabbir Ahmed, Visa Country Manager for Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan, said that the cooperation was reached to bring easier digital payment access to Nepali customers and tourists in Nepal.
Ahmed stated, “We are delighted with this cooperation. This cooperation with Fonepay is a milestone. We are excited to bring innovative, simple, and secure payment systems.”
Likewise, Fonepay Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Diwas Sapkota said that the expansion of the cross-border payment system with Visa is an important step. He said that Visa’s global network and Fonepay’s strong QR infrastructure will further promote digital payment access and enrich payment facilities for more users. He also emphasized that the service will help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and promote financial inclusion.

So far, SMEs were at a disadvantage with Visa card payment in the absence of POS machines. But that issue is being addressed. Additionally, the Fonepay Visa cooperation benefits all regular businesses and large-scale enterprises.
