When to pay vehicle tax in Nepal? Bluebook renewal, fine

It’s important to know when to pay vehicle tax in Nepal. Because if you don’t pay on time, then you will have to pay a fine. While these details are written on the bluebook aka bill book, many vehicle owners still don’t bother learning about it. So, in this post, we will let you know where to check the date for your vehicle registration renewal on Bluebook and how much of a fine you may have to pay if you don’t pay on time.

What is a blue book?

Bluebook is a document that contains key details of your vehicle and ownership. The name of the owner, vehicle number, color, bluebook renewal date, etc. is written on the bluebook. And if you are curious, just like the name itself, the color of the document is also blue with several pages on it.

When to pay vehicle tax in Nepal?

The first page of a bluebook has the date of your vehicle (bike, car, etc.) registration. You can see the registration number, vehicle type, and owner’s name. This date on the last page of the Bluebook is used to determine when to pay vehicle tax in Nepal.

Back to the date thing, your bluebook has to be renewed one year later. So, your bluebook renewal date is one year after the registration date you see on the first page of your bluebook.

The last page of your bluebook has the vehicle-renewal date and its expiration. You need to renew your vehicle before the expiration date. However, the government allows an extension of 3 months (90 days) to renew your vehicle. That means, if your vehicle registration expiry date is on Bhadra 15, you get an extension up to Mangsir 15 to renew your vehicle. However, the system comes with a catch.

The 90-day extended renewal date won’t apply if your renewal date falls in Chaitra, Baisakh, Jestha, and Ashar of the current fiscal year.

For e.g., if your vehicle renewal date is in Ashoj, then you can still pay three months or 90 days later in Poush. But if the renewal date is in Chaitra, then you can’t pay the fee 90 days later. In fact, if yours is in Baisakh, Jestha, and Ashar, then you have to pay your vehicle renewal (tax) in Chaitra in the same fiscal year to avoid fines.

The government has structured a fine system for vehicle owners if they can’t pay their vehicle tax on time. And you will have to submit the fine accordingly. If you fail to pay your vehicle tax in Chaitra (if the renewal date expires in Baisakh, Jestha, and Ashar), a 10% fine is imposed. Similarly, 15%, 20%, and 32% fine is imposed after the 30-day grace period, 45-day grace period, and if the fiscal year is exceeded, respectively.

If you fail to pay your vehicle tax even in the 90-day period, then you will be penalized with a fine. For e.g., if you can’t pay your vehicle tax within 30 days of the 90-day period, you will be subject to an extra 10% penalty in fine. If the duration surpasses 45 days after the 30-day grace time, you will be fined 15%. Similarly, you will be penalized a 20% fine if you fail to pay your vehicle tax in the 45-day grace period. If you surpass the fiscal year without paying, then you will be fined 32%.
