Government completes draft for EV policy in Nepal

The government of Nepal is in the final stage of the preparation for electric vehicle (EV) policy. According to reports, the draft for the policy has been completed, which includes standard criteria for EVs sold in Nepal such as ensuring the import of high-quality vehicles only.

The government has already prepared the draft for the EV policy in Nepal. The idea is that only the quality EVs are exported to Nepal.

EV policy in Nepal aims at ensuring standards

Basically, the EV policy aims at establishing criteria for the type of EVs that can enter Nepal for commercial purposes. The policy will have a fixed set of standard criteria relating to quality assurance, motor power, service center, battery, battery size, etc., for EVs that are brought into Nepal for sales. This helps make sure that customers are served well while also ensuring that only quality EVs are sold in Nepal. This is also very important, as some experts express fear that Nepal has been a “landfill” site to stack EVs.

“The development of the standards has now taken its final form. The draft has been sent to the Prime Minister’s Office via various ministries,” said Sushil Babu Dhakal, Joint Secretary of the Development Assistance Coordination and Quality Division of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, who played an active role in the development of the draft.

He added that the policy will be discussed soon in a cabinet meeting.’

Why is EV policy a must in Nepal?

A fixed set of principles for EV policy in Nepal is mandatory right now. It’s remarkable that Nepal has an exceptionally growing EV ecosystem in just a few years. Some of the top brands’ best electric cars are sold in Nepal. However, it also seems that there is much left to be done to promote the industry and ensure quality management.

An EV Policy sets rules and guidelines on what types of EVs are allowed to enter Nepal. In addition, it also ensures after-sales service for customers, including service center services, facilitation on buying EV parts for repair and maintenance, etc. Battery anxiety is still a deal among EV owners and prospective buyers.

EV policy should also mention provisions to address that area. It can at least enforce that EVs with a certain size and type of batteries should be allowed to be sold in Nepal.
