Delhi EV policy 2.0 mulls banning fuel-powered vehicles

A draft Delhi EV Policy 2.0 has been completed and proposes a ban on diesel and petrol-powered vehicles in Delhi. The new policy seeks to eliminate harrowing air pollution levels in Delhi and other major cities by cutting down on the use of tailpipe vehicles, including four-wheelers, two-wheelers, and auto rickshaws.

The policy has proposed a ban on fuel-powered vehicles in the nation’s capital from August 15, 2025. In recent years, New Delhi has been appearing at the top as one of the most polluted cities in the world. Smokes released from vehicles are one of the primary reasons for this environmental hazard. There have been instances when the country’s government shut down schools and other public services to keep citizens safe.

Delihi EV Policy 2.0 wants ultimate measures to eliminate pollution

The Delhi EV Policy 2.0 seeks to enact major resolutions to reduce the high level of air pollution in New Delhi. According to PTI, the new policy will come into effect soon after cabinet approval.

Since August 2020, 26,787 two-wheelers, 31,506 three-wheelers, 5,266 four-wheelers, and 323 buses have been registered in the city. The government planned to convert 25% of these vehicles into EVs by 2024, but it managed the convert up to 14% of such vehicles. The second version of the EV Policy aims to transform 95% of fuel-powered vehicles into EVs by the end of 2027.

As per the policy, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) auto rickshaws will be phased out with no renewal to be issued from August 15. They will have options to be retrofitted or used with a battery.

The EV Policy 2.0 also proposes that all vehicles used by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Council, and Delhi Jail Board be converted into EVs in phases by December 31, 2027.

A similar situation is brewing in Kathmandu

Speaking of air quality indexes, Kathmandu has also been grabbing the headlines for negative reasons. Let’s say that Kathmandu and New Delhi are competing at the top as the world’s most polluted cities. But as EV Policy 2.0, the Nepal government is also preparing its EV policy.

The difference is that the Nepali government’s EV policy is largely concerned with the quality of EVs imported to Nepal, while Delhi’s vision is to promote EV use to reduce environmental harm.
