Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD says that its new battery system can offer up to 249 miles of range with 5 minutes of charging. The new technology gives BYD an edge as it competes the fierce rivals such as Tesla.
BYD promises 5-minute charging brilliance
BYD says that its 5-minute charging system comes with 1,000 kilowatts of charging power and uses up to 1,000 amps. That translates to charging a battery at 2 km per second. The company claims that in just 5 minutes of charging, the battery can provide 400 km (249 miles) of range.
At the same time, BYD says that it has greatly emphasized safety while introducing this battery technology. It says that ultrafast charging will not hurt the battery’s lifespan and won’t cost extra with the equipment installation for the system.

Shay Natarajan, partner at Mobility Impact Partners shared that BYD’s new battery system uses a sophisticated battery cooling system compared to the competitors. “This lets the battery reach peak charging power faster and sustain that peak power longer during the charging cycle, thus increasing the average charging power during the charging cycle and allowing for significantly faster charging,” Natarajan added.
Industry experts say that the 5-minute charging attains peak power for a longer duration compared with others.

BYD’s 5-minute charging goes one above petrol vehicles
What’s also so interesting is that the 5-minute charging technology from BYD elevates electric vehicles’ position even stronger in the market. EV owners have mostly feared “range anxiety” and is even a deal breaker for some. But the continued innovation and now the advanced 5-minute charging takes the whole game to the next level.
BYD is aiming at aggressive expansion even in the West and faces stiff competition from Tesla. But the cutting-edge technology helps cement its status even stronger.
Which BYD vehicles will come with 5-minute charging technology?
Currently, BYD’s Han L and Tang L EVs come with this 5-minute charging capacity. It offers just over 400 km of range with just 5 minutes of charging. According to BYD, its upcoming vehicles will come with this advanced technology.
The EV industry is competitive with each player introducing new tech and innovation to lure customers. But BYD’s 5-minute charging could be a milestone for the industry including itself.
