BYD launches Blade Battery 2.0, 100% charge in 9 minutes

Chinese auto giant BYD has unveiled a new battery system, Blade Battery 2.0, which can be charged to up to 70% in just five minutes. The latest innovation in the battery makes it charge the battery 100% in just nine minutes. The development paves the way to a future where EV owners won’t have to stress over battery anxiety, though progress is already alleviating it in recent years.

According to BYD, this revolutionary battery system will launch in the Yangwang U7 sedan. The company shares that the battery can charge even in cold conditions (in –4°F or –20°C), charging efficiently from 20% to 97% in 12 minutes.

BYD Blade Battery 2.0 is fast in charging, but there’s a catch

Though boasting a stunning fast charging capability, BYD Blade Battery 2.0’s disadvantage is that it requires the company’s new Flash Charging EV chargers, which deliver up to 1.5 megawatts of electricity. Therefore, having compatibility could be an issue at the moment.

Another caveat is that LFP, despite being fast in charging, falls in the range department. BYD bets that driving down the charging time will dearly compensate for the lower range.

The battery uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP). It’s seen as the way ahead for EVs as manufacturers are pitching for it as it doesn’t use cobalt or nickel, which are costly metals.

The Shenzhen-based company believes that its latest innovation with the Blade Battery 2.0 will appeal to customers to buy upcoming BYD cars.
